Working Women Hostel

The Working Women Hostel is one of the projects of the KJP Assembly which was Established in the year 1986. The purpose of the project is to help those women who range from different District of Meghalaya as well as women from different states of India to settle temporarily in the Hostel. The hostel admitted only those women who are working and those who are still studying in Shillong, who has no proper permanent place to stay. The existing of this project has helped many women who needed a secure place to stay for safety and protection. Till date more than hundreds of women’s have been benefited from this project and who has remained loyal to the hostel for the helped received in times of need.

The committee had seen that the Synod (Mihngi and Sepngi) were united from the very beginning, and it was then then that the committee urged the Synod to help them to provide a land which was available at the moment which was about 10,000- 20,000 sq.ft (approx.) situated at one of the field in Mission Compound to build a hostel for those women who needed help.

With Gods grace, an opportunity came in which the Government of India was helping in providing Grants upto 75% and the Synod was willing to contribute 25% of its support. Prior, if the Synod had a land to function the Scheme there was no need for them to pay 25% which then made the Executive Committee to call for a meeting on the 8 th April 1980. The Executive Secretary had explained the possibilities of the project and it was then that they decided to start the project with the consent of all the members and came to a conclusion that the Hostel will be constructed in the mentioned land near the Khasi Pnar Academy High School and handed the responsibility to the Trust Association Committee to start the project in building the Hostel.

In the beginning there were only 25 women who are only locals and who range from different District of Mehghalaya. All the responsibilities like taking fees, and the necessary requirement of the hostel was run by the office if the KJP Synod under the care and observation of Mrs. Angel Shullai. The daily requirements for the smooth functioning of the hostel was handed over to Mrs. Polin Bareh.
